US Provides Training and Support to Peacekeepers

MALBAT-8 During TrainingThe United States provides training and support to build the capacity of the Malawian security sector to conduct peacekeeping and fight transnational threats.

In recent years, the U.S. has assisted in training eight battalions of Malawian soldiers to deploy in support of United Nations missions in Cote d’Ivoire and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).  The “MALBAT-7” peacekeeping battalion is currently deployed in the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the DRC (MONUSCO).  The next battalion, “MALBAT-8,” completed training on December 11 and will deploy to DRC to replace “MALBAT-7” in April 2016.
