U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative

U.S. President's Malaria InitiativeThe U.S. Government, through the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative, and The Global Fund currently provide nearly all of the life-saving malaria treatment drugs available free-of-charge to Malawian citizens in need.  U.S. Global Malaria Coordinator Rear Admiral Tim Ziemer visited Malawi October 28-November 3 to assess the impact of the program.  Since 2006, the U.S. President’s Malaria Initiative has invested over $200 million (MK114 billion) in Malawi.  During his visit Admiral Ziemer underscored the need for Malawian citizens to join health and law enforcement authorities to stop the widespread theft of malaria treatment drugs that threaten the successes achieved over the last nine years.  Admiral Ziemer said, “As a leading donor of malaria treatment drugs and other supplies in Malawi, the U.S. Government is extremely concerned about any diversion of donated medicines that are meant to be freely prescribed to the people of Malawi.”
