On April 6, U.S. Ambassador to Malawi Virginia Palmer congratulated the Malawi Defence Force (MDF) on becoming “Full Training Capable” for UN peacekeeping forces. This rare accomplishment certifies the MDF as one of the few militaries in Africa that is able to train soldiers for peacekeeping operations without the need for foreign assistance.
At a graduation ceremony for Malawi’s ninth battalion of UN peacekeepers held in Machinga Hills near Liwonde, Malawi, Ambassador Palmer presented MDF Commander General Spoon Phiri with the recognition and congratulated the graduates of Malawi’s ninth battalion of UN peacekeepers. “In recent years the MDF has carried out UN peacekeeping missions in Sudan, Kosovo, Ivory Coast, Liberia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo — and you have done so with the utmost professionalism and distinction. The MDF deserves to be rightly proud of this accomplishment,” said Ambassador Palmer
