Millenium Challenge Account

Millennium Challenge Account awarded grants to nine non-governmental organizations last week to support land and natural resources management along the Shire River. The grantees will use the MK 2.5 billion in grants to encourage communities living along the Shire River and its tributaries to adopt trees and soil conserving farming methods. Addressing one of the beneficiary communities in Mangochi, U.S. Ambassador Virginia Palmer said, “the Shire River provides livelihoods for most of you here, as well as for over five million other Malawians, and we need to protect it. We need to protect it because it affects how much electricity can be produced downstream, but, more importantly, we need to protect it because it is where you live, where you grow your maize, and where your children live.”
