Message for U.S. Citizens: Entry Fee for Malawi Implemented Early

Immigration officials of the Government of Malawi have begun collecting entry fees from U.S. citizens arriving at Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe as well as in Blantyre and at least some border crossing posts. A $75 USD entry fee was originally scheduled to take effect on July 1, 2015, but the Government of Malawi had announced a postponement until October 1, 2015.

The entry fee applies to nationals of countries which require Malawians to pay visa fees. This includes U.S. citizens.  Payment of the entry fee is only being accepted in U.S. dollars.

While the U.S. Embassy understands that the entry/visa fee will not be officially implemented until October 1, U.S. citizens arriving in Malawi should be prepared to pay the fee upon arrival or at the designated Immigration Department office following their arrival.

The U.S. Embassy will update this announcement as more detailed information becomes available regarding specific guidance or procedures related to the new entry fee.
