Leveraging Support for Adolescent Girls and Young Women

The U.S. Embassy in Malawi hosted a high-level delegation December 8-10 including Ambassador Deborah Birx, U.S. Global AIDS Coordinator, Ambassador Catherine Russell, U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues, Dr. Mark Dybul, Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and officials from the Global Partnership for Education, Girls Not Brides, and GAVI. The visit explored opportunities for partnerships between organizations already working with adolescent girls and young women in Malawi, and assessed the government of Malawi’s interest in developing a cross-sectoral approach to meeting the needs of this vulnerable population. In addition to meeting with Malawian President Mutharika and other senior government officials, the delegation visited projects in rural Blantyre and Machinga districts supported by the U.S. Government’s Let Girls Learn and DREAMS initiatives.
