Demonstration Alert: U.S. Embassy Lilongwe (September 11, 2023)
Location: A civil society group has stated plans to begin protests at the National Police Headquarters in Area 30 on Tuesday, September 12 and Wednesday, September 13. The start times and routes have not been confirmed yet.
Event: Information about the demonstrations is still developing. Demonstration activity could disrupt traffic. The same civil society group, known as Malawi First Pressure Group of Concerned Citizens, led protests on September 7 that blocked Lilongwe Bridge and on August 30 that resulted in a clash with another group. Malawian Police deployed tear gas during both demonstrations to disperse the crowds.
