Demonstration Alert – U. S. Embassy Lilongwe, Malawi
Location: Nationwide, including central areas of the cities of Lilongwe and Blantyre.
Within Lilongwe, march participants plan to assemble in and around the Lilongwe Community Grounds near Kamuzu Central Hospital and will march north through the city center and along Chilambula Road to Presidential Way terminating at the Presidential Complex.
In Blantyre, protesters plan to assemble at and around Kamuzu Stadium and proceed down Kamuzu Hwy to the Blantyre City Assembly via Kasungu Crescent.
Demonstrations are expected to take place on April 27, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. The groups intend to protest the Malawian government.
There will likely be significant traffic disruptions and impromptu road closures in and around areas of protest from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
There is no indication of any plans for violence or civil disturbances. However, in the past, protests in Malawi have encountered police/security force presence and the use of tear gas.
U.S. Embassy personnel have been advised to avoid areas of protest throughout the day. While the U.S. Embassy will remain open, U.S. Embassy employees are permitted to take leave on April 27, 2018.
Actions to Take:
- Avoid demonstrations and crowds.
- Exercise caution if unexpectedly in the vicinity of large gatherings or protests.
- Monitor local media for updates.
- Keep a low profile.
