Demonstration Alert – U.S. Embassy Lilongwe – July 11, 2019

Location:  Nationwide

Event: The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) called for mass demonstrations to occur every Tuesday and Friday until Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Chair Jane Ansah resigns.  Though organizers consistently have called for peaceful protest, looting and violence have occurred during recent demonstrations throughout Malawi’s major cities.

The first demonstration is scheduled for Tuesday, July 17.  Out-of-town travel for U.S. Embassy personnel must be approved in advance through Monday, July 16.  No travel beyond July 16 is approved at this time.

Actions to take:

  • Ensure you have a fully charged radio and cell phone.
  • Regularly check your phone and email for updates regarding the security environment.
  • Exercise caution when moving around all areas of Malawi.
  • If you see a barrier or individuals blocking your path, turn around and find an alternate route.
  • If you are unable to depart, keep your windows up and your doors locked, seek shelter if needed.
  • Avoid large crowds and always leave yourself room to maneuver.
