Location: A demonstration began at the Lilongwe Community Centre this morning on Thursday, September 7. It is moving through downtown Lilongwe, and currently Lilongwe Bridge is blocked by counter-protestors. The march is anticipated to continue onto M1 (Kamuzu Processions Road) past the Crossroads Traffic Circle towards the Area 18 traffic interchange, then onto Presidential Way, past the Parliament Building and then towards Kamuzu Palace.
Event: Update since 9:30 am. A civil society group, known as Malawi First Pressure Group of Concerned Citizens, began a peaceful demonstration on Thursday, September 7, 2023. It has grown to approximately 1,000 demonstrators and Lilongwe Bridge is currently blocked by counter-protestors. Tear gas has been deployed to control the crowd.
