U.S. Ambassador to Malawi Virginia Palmer and U.S. Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues Catherine Russell hosted current and former Malawian First Ladies, women diplomats, ministers, entrepreneurs, lawyers, judges, members of parliament, and other renowned women in various fields at an April 27 reception in honor of ‘Fabulous Women.’  Malawi’s First Lady, Madam Gertrude Mutharika, was the Guest of Honor.

Ambassadors Palmer and Russell highlighted the U.S. Government’s growing assistance to empower girls and young women to achieve a healthy, educated Malawi.  They quoted U.S. President Barack Obama:  “You can judge a nation, and how successful it will be, based on how it treats its women and its girls.  When women have health care and education, families are stronger, communities are more prosperous, children do better in school, nations are more prosperous.”
