Demonstration Alert – U.S. Embassy Lilongwe
July 3, 2019
Locations: Lilongwe, Blantyre, Mzuzu
Event: Nationwide protest demonstrations and vigils are scheduled for Thursday and Friday, July 04-05, 2019, in major cities around Malawi to include Lilongwe, Blantyre, and Mzuzu. It is likely these demonstrations will be large in scale and predominantly peaceful. However, the heightened tensions between political parties following the 2019 national elections could result in isolated and sporadic incidents of violence and vandalism of varying size and intensity. Tear gas and other crowd control techniques are commonly used by the Malawi Police Service even when protests are predominantly peaceful.
The U.S. Embassy anticipates participants in Lilongwe will assemble in and around Winners Chapel International and will proceed north along Kenyatta Avenue to City Centre and potentially to Capitol Hill. There may be significant and potentially long-term traffic disruptions and road closures in and around these areas throughout the day. There remains a possibility of informal road closures and blockades throughout major cities with associated acts of theft, robbery, and vandalism.
Actions to Take:
- Exercise caution moving around major cities on July 4-5.
- If you see a barrier or individuals blocking your path, turn around and find an alternate route.
- If you are unable to depart the area, keep your windows up and doors locked, seek shelter if needed.
- Avoid large crowds and always leave yourself room to maneuver.
